||||||||||
AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR GUILLERMO REYES STEPS DOWN Teatro Bravo announces a 12th Season for 2010-2011 with a full slate of projects, a three-play repertory in the fall, and two plays in the spring. First, a shift in management. Artistic Director Guillermo Reyes will assume duties as the Interim Director of the School of Theatre and Film at Arizona State University on July 1st, and will step aside as Artistic Director of Teatro Bravo for this season. The opportunity to lead an entire department will also keep him busy supervising the season of productions at Arizona State University. Reyes will participate in Teatro Bravo as artistic associate when he remounts one of his plays in the fall, otherwise he will not participate in the every day running of the teatro for at least a year. Fernando Teson will assume duties as Interim Artistic Director, starting July 1st. Teson is the Head of Performing Arts at Metropolitan Arts Institute where Teatro will be performing its three-play repertory in the fall. In September, Teatro Bravo launches a three-play repertory made up of “Manzi: The Childhood of Cesar Chavez,” a family audience play written by California-based Jose Cruz Gonzalez, which depicts the childhood of Cesar Chavez as grows up in a family of farm workers in Arizona, then in California. The play will be directed by Childsplay associate Andres Alcala and open in September (see dates below.) The second play is “Rancho Pancho,” portrays the true passionate tale of the playwright Tennessee Williams as he shares his life with a Latin Lover. Texas playwright Gregg Barrios researched a specific period in the playwright’s life in which he was writing “A Streetcar Named Desire” while having an affair with a Mexican-American young man who inspired the character of Stanley Kowalski. This play will be directed by Interim Artistic Director Fernando Teson. Finally, Teatro Bravo brings back as a late-night comedy, “Dudes Gone Wild” written and directed by Guillermo Reyes which premiered as Teatro’s entry in the Phoenix Fringe Festival back in April and returns now to shake up the night life with a wild party among bachelor friends who tell each other the truth after a few rounds of tequila, scheduled mostly as a late night show. In the spring 2011,Teatro Bravo will seek to produce “Bless Me, Ultima” (rights still being negotiated), the adaptation of the famous southwestern novel by Rudy Anaya. And also in the spring, Chandler-Gilbert Community has invited Teatro Bravo to remount “14,” the play by Jose Casas that Teatro Bravo produced in 2003, then published in the anthology Borders on Stage, based on interviews with Arizonians who express their views on illegal immigration. This will be a special co-production with CGCC as a means to re-initiate a dialogue on the controversial issue that has placed Arizona on the international radar.
